The Corner Alley

Bowling is so 1983 right? Not at Cleveland’s The Corner Alley.  Where else can you go to find a bowling alley that is modern, stylish, has a wine list and big screen tv’s at the end of the lanes? With our weather this time of year it is always good to get active in the great indoors and bowling is a great way to do that.  The Corner Alley on East 4^th and the attached 4^th Street Bar and Grill give you a unique way to spend a night out with some friends.

The Remaining Houses on Millionaires Row.

The stretch of Euclid Avenue between Public Square and The Cleveland Clinic was once known as “The most Beautiful street in America”  and also as Millionaires Row.  Most Clevelanders know it exists but few could even tell you where this even is.  The period from 1860’s to the 1920’s was a great time for industry in Cleveland and many of the world’s richest families lived right here on Euclid.  Families like Rockefeller, White and Mather had addresses here.  At its peak, prior to the great depression Millionaires row was comprised of roughly 250 mansions that averaged over 20,000 square feet each the largest being over 50,000 square feet.  As the depression gripped the world many of the owners found the homes unmanageable and had them torn down.   As this area which was once considered “country” became commercially developed and the automobile made travel more efficient the remaining owners left as well.  There are still several homes that can be seen along Euclid and the legacy of these people is still right in front of you every day with our museums, hospitals, churches and more often being a product of the donations from these early residents.  Here is a list provided by one of our Facebook fans, Thank you @Todd Nelson.

Cleveland Metroparks Toboggan Chutes in Strongsville

As we get deep into winter some of us are probably getting a case of cabin fever.  If you feel the need to get out and have a little fun in the outdoors The Cleveland Metroparks Toboggan Chutes in Strongsville can be a great way to have a little fun this time of year.  The 1000 foot ice chutes are open weekends regardless of snow (as long as it is 55 degrees or lower) from the day after Thanksgiving until the first weekend in March.  They provide the toboggan with the low price of admission.  There is also a lodge with snackbar and two fireplaces.  A family of four can ride all day for under 30 bucks!  Call them at 440-572-9990 or check out their website at http://www.clemetparks.com/recreation/tobogganing/ for more information.

30. Fourth of July Fireworks Shows

While the Fourth of July holiday is not unique to Cleveland, there are many unique ways to take in the show that we all take for granted.  Whether you get out on the boat and watch them reflect off the water or go to Blossom and watch the Cleveland Orchestra play music with your fireworks, Cleveland has a lot to be greatful for this July 4th.  Here is a great list of fireworks times and dates by city: http://www.wkyc.com/life/community/events/fireworks/

29. Open Air in Market Square

The West Side Market is one of Cleveland's gems and during some weekends in the summer it transforms from a simple farmers market to a festival type atmosphere with live music and collections of eclectic hand made art that will truly make your home unique.  Open Air in Market Square is a good experience that you should at least try once.  This Saturday July 3rd, it starts at 11am and runs with 3 different live bands until 5pm.  For the full summer schedule check it out here..

28. The Great American Rib Cook-off and Music Festival

The “semi-official” kick off to summer in Northeast Ohio is The Great American Rib Cook-off and Music Festival, held each Memorial Day weekend in downtown Cleveland at the Time-Warner Cable Amphitheater.

The event, which started in 1992, features live music (included in the admission price); BBQ'd ribs - and lots of fun. Great bands, great food … great time.  We hope to see you there!

26. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum

Cleveland rocks, and The Cleveland Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is a great place for locals and visitors alike. You can travel back in time and see exhibits that will bring back your childhood with music that you grew up listening to. As cool as this place is to look at on the outside, you need to check out what it’s really made of on the inside. The Rock Hall is one of the truly unique Cleveland landmarks that you can go back to year after year and always see something new.


Music is something that brings us all together, while we all may have different tastes a catchy tune will get you moving no matter who you are regardless of where you come from or what kind of money you have. On top of the exhibits that the Rock Hall has there are special events held there including art shows and free concerts outside throughout the year. Check it out today!

25. The Cleveland Indians Home Opener

Through good times and bad there is one thing that causes people to play hooky from work and school year after year to travel downtown. The Cleveland Indians home opener is like a holiday for area sports fans. Tomorrow the Indians will play their first home game of the 2010 season and the place will be packed with people excited to see the first true sign of summer. Whether you go with some friends and have a few beers or take the kids down to their first game you are sure to have a good time win or lose!

24. The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and Rainforest

The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and Rainforest is one of those places that is worth checking out year after year. There is always something new and interesting going on and there are many things about this place that even the most seasoned Clevelander doesn’t know.


The Zoo has the largest collection of Primate Species in North America, it has over 3000 total animals and 600 different Species. While the Zoo is not far from the heart of the city of Cleveland, you will feel as though you are thousands of miles away as you travel around to see exhibits of animals from other continents. The zoo also has many different plants from around the world and a couple of years ago it’s Titan Arum bloomed (the only time this has happened in the 15 years the plant has been here).

22. Cleveland Botanical Gardens

The one upside to winter is that it makes you enjoy the spring and summer more. In the next couple of weeks the trees, flowers, bushes and yards of Northeast Ohio will return from the dead and explode with color with new growth. Just taking a drive around town and seeing the new life will inspire you. This is a great time of year to check out the Cleveland Botanical Garden. The garden is located in University Circle which is right near Little Italy if you are looking for dinner after your trip. It is open year round but is absolutely amazing in the spring!


Check it out Tuesday – Saturday from 10am to 5pm, Sundays 12 noon to 5pm and from Memorial Day to Labor Day it stays open till 9pm on Wednesdays. It is closed Mondays and on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day.

21. Sunset at Edgewater Park

Ok, the IX indoor amusement park is in town but the weather is just too nice tonight to talk about it.  There is nothing like those first few nice days after winter has left us and what better way to celebrate the spring than heading down to Edgewater park in the evening and watching the sunset.  Bring your camera because the view is really worth a million bucks and you may want to be able to re-live it next week when the clouds roll back in.  I'm not going to get long winded here because you only have a couple of hours, go check it out!

Didn’t get enough corned beef on St. Patricks day? One trip to Slyman’s will fix that for you until next year. Slyman’s is a Cleveland original that has attracted national media, some celebrity visits and even the President of The United States! Esquire Magazine named Slyman’s Deli the best corned beef sandwich in America and they are HUGE!

19. The Cleveland Museum of Art

Don’t want to sit in the house on this rainy Sunday?  Looking for something free to do?  Check out The Cleveland Museum of Art, it is a great, free way to spend a day in Cleveland.  With over 43,000 works of art included in it’s permanent collection and additional exhibits that rotate several times a year (there is a charge if you want to see these) you can check this out over and over, it doesn’t get old.  The museum is currently undergoing a large expansion that should be complete next year so be sure to check it out when it is finished as well.

The Cleveland Museum of Art is open Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm.  It is also open Wednesday and Friday from 10am to 9pm.  It is closed on Mondays.  It is located at 11150 East Blvd.

18. Eggshell Land Easter Egg Display

Looking at Christmas lights is a tradition for many families but how about something new.  You need to check out the easter egg display at 1031 Linden Lane in Lyndhurst.  For over 50 years this home has put out an annual display of painted easter eggs that is absolutely incredible. 

This year's theme is "We Can Fly" and will feature mosaics made out of 40,000 eggs in 24 colors! Planned designs include: A bluebird,a goldfinch,a oriole and a scarlet tanager and the cavaliers logo!

They always include a 50 ft. cross and easter bunny too!

This year's display will be up from March 27 to April 5th.

17. Watch Z return to the Cavs

Ok, lets be honest, this city loves it's sports and is starving for a winner. The Indians have been close several times and the Browns have routinely broken the hearts of Cleveland sports fans for decades. The Cavs have given their share of close calls as well but their time is now.

Zydrunas Ilgauskas makes his return to the Cavs tonight at 8:15 which completes one of the most important trades in Cleveland sports history. There isn't much that can be said to quantify how big this is, you just need to sit back and watch the show for the next few months!

16. Christmas Story House Museum

This one is quite a bit out of season but is a must see.  Nearly everyone has seen the move A Christmas Story and watched 9 year old Ralphie's quest to get the ultimate Christmas present but did you know that the very home used in the movie is right here in Cleveland? 

The home used in the movie has been restored and turned into a museum that will take you back to a simpler time without cell phones, computers or the other modern convieniences where all a kid wants for Christmas is a Red Rider 200 shot Range Model Air Rifle. 

Inside you will find hundreds of behind the scenes photos from the filming of the movie, props from the filming, and even Ralph's father's car!  You will love it, don't forget to get your own "major award" from the gift shop to place in your front room window.
